This fantastic ski area is family friendly but also offers many slopes of deep snow to delight the real “freeriders”. Today, Engelberg really does seem to be a place created for angels.

Bollywood loves Swiss ski resort Engelberg

Who would have thought that Engelberg, with its c. 4,000 inhabitants, would count as one of the favourite European holiday destinations for Indians? It’s true: the small Swiss ski resort is yearned for as a place of love and romance. Since Bollywood movies, such as “Chori Chori Chupke Chupke” (the love triangle), began regularly filming here, almost every child in India knows about it. Indian lovers, in particular, are drawn here to whisper sweet nothings in the alpine resort that has become so exotic to them.

How the modern fairytale began

Engelberg - H+ Hotel & Spa Engelberg - Official website

20 years ago, Engelberg – although indeed very beautiful – was, in summer, a very dead Swiss ski resort. A shrewd mountain railway manager then had the idea of contacting the Indian film industry – which was growing very quickly at the time – to suggest that the idyllic Engelberg would be an ideal place to film Indian love stories. The Indians agreed and Bollywood movies such as “Madly in Love” that were filmed against the romantic backdrop of the Alps, made smash hits here.

The Indians soon began to arrive in droves to see the 3,200 metre high Titlis-glacier, made famous in so many of the films. Since then, Engelberg has been a popular holiday destination throughout the year.
