Sights and attractions
If you want to explore Hanover, you should first pay a visit to the Neues Rathaus, or New Town Hall. The arched elevator to the Rathaus dome with magnificent views of the city is unique in Europe. Take the lift at a 17 degree angle to get the 98m high dome. The Baroque gardens at Schloss Herrenhausen attract visitors like a magnet. The extensive park complex is one of the best preserved in all of Europe, with the flair of the 17th century.
There has also been a museum in the castle since 2013. The Lower Saxony State Museum will inspire culture fans with its collection of paintings and sculptures. Nor should you miss a stroll though the small, but perfectly formed Old Town in the centre of the city. Traditional craftsmen’s houses, exclusive boutiques and cosy cafés await. A flea market also takes place every Saturday on the nearby Leinufer bank. Hanover zoo is an experience for all the family, with over 3,000 different kinds of animals, a summer luge run and seven fantastic themed worlds.
Leisure activities and excursions
The Maschsee lake in the heart of the city provides great opportunities to relax and recover. This is where the popular Maschseefest takes place every summer. Hanover also offers first-rate, exciting night-life, with theatre, concerts and opera for culture fans and a trendy party scene for the young or young at heart. The Steinviertel district in the centre comes strongly recommended, with lots of bars, clubs and discos, as well as the Funpark. For a cosy break, try a beer in the “Shakespeare”.
For a day trip, try a visit to the Aviation Museum in Laatzen, or the Park der Sinne (Park of the Senses) which is there too. You can admire unique floral diversity in the Naturpark, and experience bewitching scents. From Hanover, it’s also not far to the open air museum Dinosaur Park in Münchehagen. There is a bus connection which takes you there from the city.
