Small alley in Erfurt's old town - H2 Hotel Erfurt

An old town like a history book

The heart of Erfurt is the old town, which you can explore on foot thanks to the central location of the H2 Hotel Erfurt. The oldest parts date back to the 10th century, while the outer Old Town was built in the 14th century. The old town still has a historic appearance today, characterized by over 20 medieval churches and magnificent half-timbered houses as well as many bourgeois and merchant houses from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. After the city fortifications were demolished in 1873, a ring of residential districts, known as the Erfurt suburbs, emerged until the 1930s, tracing the stylistic changes between the Gründerzeit and New Objectivity. This ring was spared war damage and later renovations and is still completely preserved today. Even today, you will encounter great names such as Bach, Luther, Goethe and van der Velde in Erfurt's old town. Stroll along historical paths and also discover the medieval Jewish heritage of Erfurt with the old synagogue and the mikvah, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The unique bridge Krämerbrücke - H2 Hotel Erfurt

Erfurt's Krämerbrücke – a landmark with a cozy flair

The Krämerbrücke is considered to be the oldest non-religious building in Erfurt. After several previous bridges had burnt down, it was rebuilt in its current form at the end of the 15th century. It is the only bridge north of the Alps to be built with houses and, at 79 meters long, is also the longest in Europe. It crosses the Gera and was part of the Via Regia trade route. Originally built with 62 half-timbered houses, 32 buildings still adorn the Krämerbrücke today. Take a walk here from the H2 Hotel Erfurt and stroll across the bridge, which is closed to traffic. It is an impressive 26 meters wide - but the road is only about five and a half meters wide: In the houses, which are around ten meters deep and three storeys high, there are now many stores selling arts and crafts and antiques - just the place for a nice souvenir.
