Discover Cologne
Cologne Cathedral is one of German’s most-visited attractions.
First-rate museums and an historic Old Town with traditional brewing houses are some of Cologne’s other plus-points. The broad spectrum of famous events ranges from Carnival and the Cologne Lights firework displays to the Christmas markets. The outstanding shopping is another big crowd-puller - whether on the shopping streets Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse or in one of the shopping arcades.

A tour through Cologne
The Gothic cathedral with its high, looming towers forms the magnificent focal point of the city centre. Directly behind it is the Romano Germanic Museum with the famous Dionysus mosaic. Museum Ludwig and its extensive pop-art collection is just a few metres away form the cathedral. The expression 4711 is closely linked with the city, and you can find out everything you need to know about the famous “cologne” in their main site in Glockengasse. Visit the Old Town and Old Market as a starting point. It is surrounded by historic buildings and traditional inns. If you walk from there to the Rheinau Harbour, you will discover over 2,000 years of city and architectural history.
For families with children, a visit to the zoo is top priority. Cologne Zoo inspires visitors with attractions such as the elephant house, ape cliffs, an aquarium and much, much more. The Rhine cable car is located near the zoo, guaranteeing unique panoramic views. No tour of the city is complete without a visit to a brew house. Enjoy a fresh Kölsch straight from the barrel, a light, top-fermented beer, drunk from slim glasses. To go with it, try the specialities such as a Halven Hahn, a rye bread roll with cheese, or Rhineland Sauerbraten roast pork. The Carnival festival is classic Cologne, starting on the 11th of the 11th at 11.11, and climaxing with the Shrove Monday procession.
Excursions in the surrounding area
A boat trip will bring you into the Siebengebrige hills and to wine growing areas such as Linz and Unkel. The Drachenfels hill is yet another in this region. In the former capital Bonn, you can follow in the steps of history, and wonder at the Palais Schaumberg and the Villa Hammerschmidt.
